The Phantom Economy of Torments

This video, created by The Cotard Syndicate for the exhibition Art Environment Action! at the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center at Parsons in 2012, uses phantom limb syndrome as a metaphor for examining the brain’s ability to rewire itself based on the imaginings and re-imaginings of our severed relationship to nature and the natural world. We are exploring the role of neuroplasticity as it pertains to the malleability of the senses and how they are easily influenced by external stimuli and how corporate culture leverages and exploits these vulnerabilities in order to get us to purchase and consume goods that purport to bring us closer to nature and the natural world.
